All of my rats are kept in crit cages. There are many suitable cages available for rats. They should be a suitable size to house the number of rats you intend to keep. My rats are bedded on shredded paper. Rats can be bedded on a variety on substances. Paper based cat litter, cardboard and paper are some of the ones used. Shavings and sawdust should not be used as they can cause respiratory issues in rats.
Rats are playful animals that enjoy a rich environment. Toys can provide the perfect enrichment to a cage. Pets stores and online stores have extensive ranges of toys available for the rat owner to choose from. Rope bridges, hammocks, ladders and platforms all make the cage an inviting and fun place for the rats. I ensure that there are always things for my rats to do, and places for them to hide and relax - usually in a big pile together!
I feed my rats a nutritionally balanced diet. They get fresh fruit and vegetables a few times during the week. Treats are given on occassion. Pregnant and lactating does are given a higher nutritional diet to ensure that they remain fit and healthy. Kits are also given a diet high in vital nutrients to make sure they grow strong and healthy.
